Life cycle assessment (LCA) for flow batteries: A review of methodological decisions

نویسندگان

چکیده

A transition from fossil to renewable energy requires the development of sustainable electric storage systems capable accommodate an increasing amount energy, at larger power and for a longer time. Flow batteries are seen as one promising technology face this challenge. As different innovations in field still under development, reproducible, comparable verifiable life cycle assessment studies crucial providing clear evidence on sustainability flow battery systems. Based review 20 relevant systems, published between 1999 2021, contribution explored methodological choices regarding sequence phases defined ISO 14,040 series: goal scope definition, inventory analysis, impact interpretation. Inspired by good practice examples, common gaps weaknesses were identified recommendations comparative derived. This includes suggestions expanded functional unit provision more detailed transparent reporting LCI data while using input/output tables. Outcomes study also relevance amendment Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC, where first drafts revision European Council, including introduction passport, which should encourage producers reduce their carbon footprint avoid problematic materials.

Life Cycle Assessment (lca) of Nanomaterials: a Comprehensive Approach

LCA is a suitable method to assess the environmental performance of nanotechnology-based products, although challenges remain due to uncertainties and data gaps. LEITAT participates in different European projects, such as NANOMICEX, NANOPOLYTOX, NEXTEC, EUROTAPES and NANOSOLUTIONS, which contribute in filling in these gaps. Selected representative nanotechnology-based products were modelled, in...

Life cycle assessment (LCA) applied to the process industry: a review

Purpose: Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology is a well-established analytical method to quantify environmental impacts, which has been mainly applied to products. However, recent literature would suggest that it has also the potential as an analysis and design tool for processes, and stresses that one of the biggest challenges of this decade in the field of process systems engineering (PSE)...

Sustainability Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Of Household Food Waste Management in Urban Areas

Background: Food waste is a very serious problem, it is proven that Indonesia is the second largest producer of food waste in the world. A limited waste management system will result in a decrease in environmental quality such as air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. So far, the waste management system is only limited to reducing waste generation. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a ...
